Module Outline

This Stage 10 module is for students who have already acquired the capacity to function with autonomy in the target language (TL) at level C1 (Proficient User) of the Common European Framework of Reference [CEFR]. Building on existing levels of proficiency the module aims to:

‒ enable students to understand, organise, articulate, and communicate effectively the main ideas and detail within an extended project in the target language
‒ encourage learner autonomy and enable students to source and select appropriate target language resources relevant to their independent study project
‒ consolidate and develop the range of complex TL language structures, syntax, and specialised vocabulary to allow consistent accuracy, control, cohesion and fluidity in use of the TL
‒ facilitate the exploration, analysis of a special subject linked to the student’s chosen field of study

This module is at level C1/+ (Proficient User) of the CEFR for Languages and allows scope for performance at level C2.

Module learning outcomes

With reference to CEFR C1/+ level, the student can demonstrate understanding of long and complex factual and/or literary texts and/or specialised target language within their field, including differences in style

Use the target language effectively and flexibly for academic and/or professional purposes to structure and present an argument, description, or narrative logically and clearly

Demonstrate effective use and application of complex language structures of the target language including selection of appropriate specialised terms from a discipline-specific lexicon

Demonstrate in the target language knowledge and analysis of a special subject linked to a chosen field of study
