Module Outline
This module will critically explore how peace is understood by various actors involved in peace and peacebuilding work around the world. It will look at dominant Western approaches to external peacebuilding in conflict-affected contexts, challenge the assumptions that underpin these approaches, and explore how local populations promote alternative approaches to peace. The course will give students an overview of different aspects of the peace process and encourage students to think about the differences between positive and negative peace. Throughout the course students will critically reflect on what constitutes peace, whose responsibility it is to build peace, and how different forms of peace benefit different actors.
Module learning outcomes
Gain a deeper understanding and critically evaluate the spectrum of theoretical approaches that exist to explain and categorise approaches to peace, peace and violence with an emphasis on non-traditional and critical theories.
Critically apply the theoretical concepts and ideas from the course to everyday experiences, current events and national and global politics.
Understand, analyse and communicate to others the diverse ways in which people begin to challenge violence and injustice and promote social, political and economic transformation at the global and local level
Utilise the methods and techniques learned in class to extend their knowledge and understanding to initiate and carry out projects with other students and within the community
