Module Outline

This module introduces students to key global challenges, and innovative
responses to them. Using a two-week block of interactive lectures for each ‘challenge’ (e.g. global
health) students get an in-depth insight from experts on each theme. Students explore how
problems are defined and measured by different development actors, often in reference to
international development frameworks (e.g. SDGs). Group work is used to think through creative
responses, including policy, technical, social and activist innovations, within specific geographical
contexts. The module is designed with a critical lens on development policy and practice, whilst
providing the tools to generate positive change.

Module learning outcomes

Develop a critical understanding of key development challenges.

Demonstrate a capacity to critically reflect on the politics and
processes that underpin responses to development challenges.

Evidence an understanding of how creative innovations can be
sourced and embedded within specific geographical contexts,

Demonstrate good writing skills that showcase the student’s ability to
be reflexive and to engage with academic and policy literature
