Module Outline
We are often told that we live in a globalised world where scale and distance no longer matter, where anywhere in the world is at reach and on hand. Against such blandishments – and against the environmental costs of air-travel and wider impacts of overseas field teaching – this field-course module focuses the lens on the very geographies in which the university is located. The ‘local’ herein provides both a window on wider, ‘global’ processes as well as being considered as important in its own right. Through a combination of seminars (online) and non-residential field teaching (subject to Covid-related restrictions), the module explores the landscapes of ßÏßÏÊÓƵ, both rural and urban, human and physical. Specifically, it examines three overlapping intellectual themes: continuity and change in urban forms; rural heritage and environmental politics; and, coasts, cliffs and conservation.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the nature of the relationships and processes that shape the geographies of south-east England.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of developing research projects to deploy in the field.
Demonstrate an organised approach to the design, execution and writing up of research.
Recognise and critically evaluate the importance of understanding the geographies of our immediate environs and contexts.
