Module Outline
The module is designed to introduce students to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) where they will gain insight into the basic principles of GIS which will be then applied using a widely-used GIS software package. The module will provide a theoretical background that will enable students to look critically at the subject while providing them with practical skills in using these tools. Students will gain direct experience of a range of data collection, data capture, database, analytical and visualisation techniques. This methodology will be illustrated through a range of social and environmental applications, emphasising the decision-assisting potential of GIS analysis. The module should be of value to student who; wish to use GIS software, the products of GIS analysis, or will commission or evaluate GIS work by others. The module should also enable students to produce maps using free GIS applications.

Understand the basic concepts of GIS, including the various introductory tools used.
Find, download, and analyse useful spatial data
Critically assess maps seen in other reports, articles or news.
Solve spatial problems and communicate the results to a wide audience
