Get study help from other students
Find out about a style of student mentoring called Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), and how it can help you.
About Peer Assisted Learning (PAL)
If you need confidential support and advice on your studies in Informatics, you can get help from other students who have been through the same things you might be experiencing. This process is called Peer Assisted Learning (PAL).
It involves second- and third-year students running informal study sessions (usually one to one) alongside a number of Informatics modules. They also run workshops such as academic support like maths and java workshops to interest workshops such as Git, Robotics etc..
It is always run by students for students.
How it works
PAL takes place in the Autumn and Spring terms. We do answer questions online on the enginf discord channels, but we cannot guarantee tutors are checking these during the winter and summer break (usually they do).
Students turn up at a designated place and time regularly and anyone can drop in. These places are typically the Chichester labs. Look for people in purple hoodies/ t shirts and on the screens.
How to attend
To find out more about the PAL scheme, and see when sessions are running, see the (you can if you don't already have access).
Mentoring
A number of the PAL team are also trained mentors, and can provide you with support on a range of academic issues beyond the specifics of your individual modules.
Tom (ts468@sussex.ac.uk) and Dexter (d.r.shepherd@sussex.ac.uk), the PAL leaders, are the Senior Student Mentors for Informatics. They can run drop-in during term times, and can also refer you to other mentors for online and one-to-one help.
Senior Student Mentor Drop-in:
If you have issues you do not want to bring to other undergraduate students and would prefer to talk to the PAL leadership, then please get in touch with the senior student mentors listed above.
