Ethical guidelines

Ethical implications of research

All students should discuss the ethical implications of their MSc project research with their supervisor. This discussion should take place early on in the project. There are three possible outcomes of this discussion: 1. No ethical review or user testing compliance form required; 2. User testing compliance form required; 3. Ethical review required.

If your project involves the collection of data from human participants or the use of already-collected data from human participants, then you will need an ethical review

Guidance and forms

The School of Engineering & Informatics has developed subject-specific ethics guidance and an ethical review compliance form. Refer to the School's guidance on research governance, and discuss with your supervisor what form of ethical approval you require. Note that the procedures differ depending on the type of student and whether the research is low or high risk. The form and guidance can be used as a checklist for the supervisor and student to identify whether ethical review is required.

PLEASE NOTE: following the compliance procedure and/or obtaining ethical clearance are essential and failure to do so when necessary will have serious consequences for the admissibility of a project.
