Accommodation for families
Find out more about accommodation options for families.
The University has a limited number of family units which currently have no availability. We therefore encourage you to prioritise your search for accommodation in the private rented sector. We cannot provide any temporary or emergency accommodation if you arrive with your family without securing housing.
If you want to express an interest in university-managed family housing please email housing@sussex.ac.uk.
Housing advice for families
If you're planning on bringing members of your family with you, we advise that you consider the significant cost and challenges of securing suitable accommodation before you make firm plans to travel with dependants.
We advise that you do not travel to Brighton & Hove with your dependants in the first instance. You should come to ßÏßÏÊÓƵ on your own first to find and secure accommodation in the private rental sector that meets your family's needs.
The University is not able to find this accommodation for you.
It is important that you secure permanent accommodation for your family before they arrive, because:
- temporary accommodation is expensive
- the demand for accommodation in Brighton & Hove and the surrounding area is high, so it can take several weeks or even months to find accommodation
- the University has very limited family accommodation and demand far exceeds availability.
Paying for private accommodation
Accommodation in the private sector is competitive and expensive. Make sure that you are prepared for the upfront and ongoing costs you’re likely to need to pay for your accommodation.
As a guide, average monthly costs start at £1,300 for a two-bedroom apartment and £2,100 for a four-bedroom house.
Upfront costs you’ll typically be required to pay in advance include:
- a security deposit (usually five weeks rent)
- a holding deposit (usually one weeks rent)
- 6-12 months of rent (this is required if you do not have a UK-based guarantor).
We strongly recommend you have a plan in place for while you search for a permanent solution for your family. You should also have the right budget in place, and have completed as much research as possible to understand how to approach your search.
You must not rely on the University to provide or find accommodation for your family because we will be unable to do this.
