Are you a non-law graduate looking for a law conversion course to get up to speed with a range of legal concepts?
This course offers you the opportunity to gain a Masters in Law so you’re prepared for many different career options. Replacing the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)/Common Professional Examination (CPE), this degree focuses on the key areas of the law in England and Wales and provides a solid foundation for preparing for the first stage of the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), or training for the Bar.
During your studies, you’ll develop legal awareness and have opportunities to take part in skills training – such as learning how to moot, interview clients and negotiate – while engaging in informed discussion of the law. You’ll also experience some of the approaches used in vocational legal training such as the SQE.
When you graduate, you’ll be prepared for a range of career options including:
- qualifying as a solicitor
- qualifying as a barrister
- undertaking legal research
- undertaking further study.
Accreditation
This course satisfies the academic component / GDL requirements of Bar training (subject to minimum pass marks and number of attempts). This degree acts as a gateway to further qualification as both a solicitor and a barrister. The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) must be taken by graduates wishing to become a solicitor.

Note that qualifications obtained by distance learning or awarded by studying outside these countries cannot be accepted for English language purposes.
You will normally be expected to have completed the qualification within two years before starting your course at Sussex. MA or Graduate Diploma?
If you wish to graduate with the MA, you start work on your dissertation in the spring term and submit it in the summer.
You also have the option to finish your degree before the summer with a Diploma, which will give you the same scope to proceed to the next stage of legal qualification as a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL).

Options
Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. This list gives you a flavour of our options, which are kept under review and may change, for example in response to student feedback or the latest research.
While it’s our aim for students to take their preferred combinations of options, this can’t be guaranteed and will be subject to timetabling. Options may be grouped and if so, students will be able to choose a set number of options from the selection available in any particular group.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown here.

I chose to study the MA as I wanted to make a transition into Law and make a career change. The MA Law was a great opportunity for me to undertake a course in law that would give me a qualifying Law degree and allow me to make that career change.
So our Law MA at ßÏßÏÊÓƵ is a law conversion course for students who have a first degree in a different discipline, but who want to go on to qualify as solicitors or barristers.

As opposed to other universities where you’ll have a more traditional conversion course, the MA Law at ßÏßÏÊÓƵ allows you to take optional modules to expand your legal knowledge into areas you would be more interested in, which align more with your career prospects.
ßÏßÏÊÓƵ offers a number of law skills competitions, and as someone who was thinking about a career in the Bar, I decided to take on mooting.
Mooting teaches you transferable skills. The key one will be time management and organisational skills, which you will need when managing cases down the line.
The students have a chance to write a dissertation in the summer, which gives them an opportunity to develop their interest in an area of Law that they find particularly interesting. One of the other things about ßÏßÏÊÓƵ that makes us special is the fact that we have some amazing experts amongst our teaching staff.

When I was looking around universities, one of the main things I wanted was the lifestyle that Brighton offers. That's why I picked Brighton and that's why I picked Sussex.
One thing that drew me to the course in particular was the fact that it was offered as a Masters rather than a Postgraduate Diploma, and that gave me the opportunity to do some of my own research and write a Masters dissertation.
I chose to study the MA Law because of the expertise of the faculty.
Looking back on the entire course, I learnt some really, really valuable and transferable skills that will stand me in good stead for a career at the Bar in the future.

How much does it cost?
Fees
- Home students:
- £11,025 per year for full-time students
- Channel Islands and Isle of Man students:
- £11,025 per year for full-time students
- International students:
- £22,575 per year for full-time students
If you study part time over two years, you’ll be charged 50% of the equivalent full-time fee in each year of study. Your second-year fee – if you continue your studies without a break – will be subject to a 3% increase (subject to rounding).

Please note that all costs are best estimates based on current market values. Activities may be subject to unavoidable change in response to Government advice. Textbooks
The Law School provides online access to core texts for every module free of charge. However, you may choose to buy hard copies of some textbooks. The approximate cost of buying new copies of textbooks for all modules is £300.
Statute Books
You may find it useful to have a hard copy of a statute book for some modules. These cost around £15 each.
Law Society Membership
If you choose to become a Student Law Society member, annual membership costs £12. The Student Law Society runs optional events and trips four or five times a year. Costs vary but usually range between £5 and £40 per event.
Skills Competitions
For students who take part in optional skills competitions, most of the associated costs will be covered by the School. Students will need to cover some costs such as formal clothing and may need to cover printing costs when online bundles are not permitted. These costs will depend on the stage reached and whether it is an internal or external competition.
Law Ball
Tickets for the Annual Law Ball organised by the Student Law Society cost around £30. Attendance is optional.
