Spring teaching
On this module, you’ll study four classic criminological research monographs, gaining an in-depth understanding of their content, context, and impact on the discipline. You’ll also develop the skills needed to critically analyse primary texts.
The monographs studied include:
- The Jack Roller (Shaw, 1930)
- Society of Captives (Sykes, 1958)
- Hooligan: A History of Respectable Fears (Pearson, 1983)
- Criminal Women (Carlen, 1985)
You’ll read these monographs in full and explore their historical and intellectual context through lectures and seminars.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 23 hours of contact time and about 127 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
