Performance Workshop (W3047)

15 credits, Level 5

Spring teaching

This module gives you the opportunity to develop your individual performance practice in both solo and group situations, exploring how you perform through a series of thematically focussed workshops. Along with developing solo repertoire for performance, you will form ensembles, deciding what material to play and performing together.

Over the course of the module, you will investigate critical perspectives on solo and ensemble practice including: performance communication, listening skills, repertoire choice, rehearsal technique, performance preparation and expressivity. You will explore these topics further through their own series of self-directed rehearsals.

The notion of an ensemble is considered broadly, and examples may include: a string quartet, vocal trio, jazz band, folk group, rock or pop band, or electronic group. There is no requirement to be able to read notated music, and you are encouraged to draw on their diverse musical backgrounds to re-think musical repertoire in an interesting way.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 12 hours of contact time and about 138 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
