Art and the City II (V4048B)

15 credits, Level 5

Spring teaching

The module forms part of the Second Year teaching for the Art History single honours programme and all joint honours programmes with Art History. In week 5 of the Spring term, Art History students go on a compulsory Study trip to Rome.

Art and the City is concerned with the physical and social contexts for the production and consumption of works of visual art and is built round a geographical case studies of the city of Rome.

This course aims to provide detailed study of art in a single city across a broad timeframe (Classical to Contemporary). It focuses on the spaces in which art is situated rather than on specific objects in museum collections. It lays emphasis on how to understand art in its physical context, and how to record it.
