Sustainability in Engineering (H7136)

Spring teaching
This module explores the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability. It also introduces quantitative methods to assess sustainability overall.
You will gain hands-on experience in calculating the cumulative energy and exergy consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions for industrial, agricultural and biotechnological processes. We’ll also discuss risk management and decision making methods.
At the end of the module, you’ll be able to:
- apply exergy analysis to assess sustainability of a process or system
- develop innovative solutions to improve the thermo-economic sustainability of a process
- apply risk-management and decision-making methods in engineering projects.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 130 hours of work. This breaks down into about 35 hours of contact time and about 95 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology.
