Principles of Medical Neuroscience (C1129)

Autumn teaching

Run in collaboration with the Brighton and ßÏßÏÊÓƵ Medical School, this modules has three overarching themes:

  • fundamental neuroscience and the brain
  • sensory inputs and motor outputs
  • modulatory systems in psychiatry.

You’ll learn about the anatomical and physiological foundations of the nervous system and neurons. This includes synaptic transmission and effects of drugs on the brain.

You’ll also explore learning and memory, extending into dementia, as well as plasticity and regeneration in relation to neuropathology and psychological aspects of neurological diseases.

In addition you’ll look at the neurobiology and neurochemistry of emotion and reward pathways, alongside related disorders and treatments.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 73 hours of contact time and about 227 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
