Autumn and spring teaching

This module introduces you to the structure and core elements of criminal liability. You’ll:

  • look at substantive criminal offences and defences via close analysis of relevant statute and case law
  • focus on understanding how the substantive legal rules are applied
  • consider the extent to which the offences and defences are clearly defined, paying attention to elements of each offence open to competing interpretations
  • think critically about the types of conduct that should be criminalised and the circumstances in which individuals should be held criminally responsible for their actions.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 52 hours of contact time and about 248 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology.
