Abraham’s story
I’ve embedded my learning into my professional projects, enhancing my clients’ credibility.” ABRAHAM OLOGUNDUDU
Media Practice for Development and Social Change MA graduate
‘I’ve always wanted to find my purpose, and I’ve always wanted to help people. In my culture, you’re encouraged to follow traditional career paths, so I originally intended to become a doctor – but after studying for a degree in physics and education, I realised alternative routes are equally meaningful.
As a teenager, I established a blog that reached audiences in over 30 countries and helped me gain experience in copywriting and web development. By the time I graduated, people were asking me how digital content could grow their businesses.
This inspired me to launch my own consultancy. I work closely with NGOs that care about local communities, as well as socially conscious and social impact focused businesses and organisations. I also run programmes such as SocialGood Lagos, which amplifies voices around the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals.
I’d gained lots of professional experience, but knew there were gaps in my knowledge, so I decided to study for a Masters to help me further drive social change. After discovering the Media Practice for Development and Social Change MA, my mind was set on Sussex. The course felt rooted in practice, and we hit the ground running from our very first assignment.
My tutors were super supportive, and valued experiential learning. They taught me the importance of processes and structures – helping me appreciate the business of design, not just the design of business. They taught me how to empower the communities I work with by co-designing stories underpinned by humanity and dignity. They also commended my design work, which inspired me to develop my skills and write my final thesis on the lived experience of designers back home.
Since returning to Nigeria, I’ve embedded my learning into my professional projects, enhancing my clients’ credibility. I’ve also been teaching design students at a local university while gaining more grassroots knowledge.
Ultimately, I’d like to undertake a PhD on social design alongside my studio practice – developing solutions that make a difference to my country and the wider world.’
