Researcher development opportunities for part-time researchers

This Autumn, we are pleased to highlight a range of training opportunities available through our Researcher Development Programme which may be of particular interest to part-time researchers, including two Saturday workshops, online courses, and a series of weekly webinars.

We also offer a range of , which can be accessed at any time via Study Direct.

 

Saturday workshops

The Part-time Researcher - Saturday 15th October (10.00 – 13.00)

Workshop description: It can be difficult combining doctoral research with paid work and other responsibilities. This informal event gives you an opportunity to meet other people who are studying part-time, discover some tips from Doctoral School staff, and also find out about the many resources available to you.

Effective Researcher - Saturday 19th November (09.30 – 16.30) 

Workshop description: Make a successful start to your doctorate with this practical workshop, designed to prepare you for the doctoral journey ahead. You'll get the opportunity to meet researchers from across the University and build your skills in communication, problem solving, and time management.

 

Online courses

Take 5: Twitter - Monday 24th - Friday 28th October

Facilitated by colleagues from the Technology Enhanced Learning team, this 'Take 5' online bitesize course offers the opportunity to gain an insight into Twitter. From tweeting and following to hashtags and Twitter chats, this course will give you a comprehensive introduction.

You'll set up your own account and learn all the ins and outs of Twitter as well as ways in which you can establish and develop your personal learning network.

Working through in bitesize pieces, for the duration of the course you'll receive an e-mail each day, alerting you when the next section of the course becomes available.

Take 5: Digital Note-making and Bookmarking - Monday 28th November - Friday 2nd December

This short online course provides an introduction to digital note-making and bookmarking, offering suggestions for how you can use these technologies in your research. It's facilitated by colleagues from the Technology Enhanced Learning team, who are available to answer questions and provide more information. They'll introduce you to tools such as OneNote, Evernote, Google Keep, Diigo, Pocket, and Flipboard.

The content is delivered in bite-sized sessions over 5 days, allowing you to participate in lunch breaks or spare time. Each day finishes with a short activity to help you reinforce and demonstrate what you've learned.

 

Webinars

Our webinars allow you to participate in our Researcher Development Programme online, wherever you are based. Webinars run for one hour, and you can learn from the tutor, see the slides, access supporting materials, and engage in online discussions.
